Yes, but we recommend before you leave the hotel make sure you have a scan or other electronic version of all important travel documents in case they are lost or stolen. Carry copies of these scans on all suitable devices as well as emailing them to yourself.

 Make sure your luggage can easily be padlocked, these won’t prevent a determined thief from slashing it open but it is a strong deterrent to casual light fingers. Never leave cash, mobile phones, electronic devices and other valuables lying around openly at the hotel or anywhere in public.

Avoid displaying expensive jewelry,laptop or large amount of cash in urban areas.

Avoid walking around towns after dark.If you do, there’s safety in numbers and it is always advisable to stick to busy and well – lit streets.

Yes, Most parts of Tanzania are suited to solo travel. Locals are very friendly and will always go out of their way to make single travelers feel at home. Arusha city in particular is suited to those who relish urban attractions, whether it be museums, bars, night clubs and live music venues.

Private game drives are probably suited better to single travellers who have a healthy budget.

Low season rates in Tanzania national parks are available from the beginning of April to the end of May when the country is expecting less tourists.

Safari lodges have guest rooms similar to a hotel with en – suite bathrooms.They are comfortably furnished with all facilities normally associated with a 2-3 star hotel

Tented lodges have rooms which are tents on a platform and with a roof and also have en-suite facilities with shower, flush toilet and hot as well as cold running water just like a hotel bathroom. The safari lodges and bigger tented lodges can be more touristy and being larger establishment they can be a bit impersonal if you are traveling alone or as couple.

 They suite those who prefer the infrastructure and facilities of a hotel and most have swimming pools and extensive grounds and garden.

The beautique lodges and camps can be very stylish and smart in terms of design and decor often with very spacious rooms. Eco – camps and smaller tented camps have insect proof tent with en -suite facilities include safari shower and flush toilet.

They give a more authentic safari experience but the tents are comfortably furnished with proper beds and you don’t need to bring your own sleeping bag. The emphasis is usually on having excellent guide and great wildlife viewing away from the crouds.

Guests often eat together and people traveling alone usually say that they found the atmosphere- friendly and enjoyed meeting other like-minded travelers around the camp fire in the evening or at dinner.

The adventure camps are a budget option with guests bring their own sleeping bag and towels and accommodation is in small dome tented with a mattress on the floor.

 Each tent has it’s own cubicle with a flush toilet, safari shower and wash basin. The adventure camps are suitable only for those who don’t mind real camping  and can put with some degrees of roughing it.

 Apart from accommodation in simple dome tent,the meals and the guiding are the same standards as the higher quality camps and game drives are in 4/4 safari vehicle. For those on a limited budget, the adventure camps are a good alternative to the big tourist lodges.

Arusha , Moshi, Zanzibar and other larger cities are liberally dotted with shopping malls that typically contain supermarkets and a plethora of other retail outlets selling the sort of goods you’d expect in similar establishments in North America and Europe.

Home- grown food stuffs ,wines and other local produce tends to be very inexpensive by international standards but imported goods can be pricey. Smaller towns tends to have less supermarket offering a

similar range of goods but less choice than their big city counterparts. Shopping opportunities are rather more limited in national parks.

Handcrafted shops stalls can be found at many lodges/hotels and most towns and other places where tourists congregate.With a mind-boggling array of crafts from all over Africa is on sale at markets such as Maasai market places,curio shops and World Heritage Centre.

 

The Tanzanian shillings trades at very favorable rates to most international currency. There are no need to bring large amount of hard currency cash or to buy shillings in advance.

 Major international credit/debit cards for instance VISA CARD , MASTER CARD  and to a lesser extent American Express can be used to draw local currency at 24 hours ATM machine throughout the country.

 That said, it is a good idea to carry a bit of hard currency cash as a fallback ,say the equivalent of around $300 – 500 and this can be exchanged into shillings at any bank or beauro de change.

Aside from checking any relevant vaccinations and seeking advice about anti-malaria drugs , no special preparation are required for a trip to Tanzania. All over the- counter -medications  are widely available at pharmacies, but you might want to buy essentials such as sun block and insect repellent before you travel.

Travelers who wear contact lenses might find that their eyes are more irritable in the dry heat typically of parts of Tanzania (park glasses as a backup).

 If travelling with children, please make sure that you have all of the required documentation and original birth certificate for each children at hand. This is part of the child visa regulation implemented by the Tanzania Home Affairs department.

Restaurants operate on a similar basis to those in Europe and North America. A 10-15% tip to the waiter is standard ,depending on the quality of service At the hotels and lodges it is usually easier to leave a tip in the tipping box Hotel and lodge porters usually expect a tip of around 5-10 dollar On organised tours , most tips are handled by the guide / tour leader, but is customary to tip to the guide/tour leader at the end , usually as a group rather than an individual basis.
